Research as foundation

earn the right to mock

Mockery without research is fragile. The joke that has no anchor in the record dissolves when challenged. Deep research is what makes the joke defensible — and makes the joker harder to characterize as obsessive.

A target under sustained targeting is constantly pressed toward a binary: stay silent and accept the framing the operation is constructing, or react publicly and be characterized as obsessive, paranoid, or unhinged. Mockery as armor is one form of public response that escapes the binary — but only if the mockery has substance underneath it. Without research, mockery is exactly the obsessive-grievance signal the operators want the target to produce. With research, the same mockery becomes informed criticism that audiences take seriously.

The research is the foundation. Everything else — the limericks, the cartoons, the visual catalog, the snark — rests on it.

The research is for you first, the public second. Before mockery can be specific, you have to know what you are mocking. That means time spent inside the actual literature on the kind-of-actor profile, the kind-of-tradition vocabulary, the kind-of-tactic infrastructure — not the popularized version, the source material. The reference sites David has built (covertnarc.org, unoccult.org, plausibledenial.org, theslows.org, blownaway.org, and the rest) are the externalized record of this research. The work that produced them is what made the eventual mockery defensible.

Publish the research separately from the mockery. Mockery on a site with no underlying research reads as venting. Mockery on a site that links to a sustained body of sourced reference work reads as informed criticism backed by a body of evidence. The two registers are different and need to live in different places. The case-file site is the place for the personal account and the mockery; the reference sites are the place for the dispassionate evidence base. Each strengthens the other.

Use the research as evidentiary armor in its own right. A target who has produced a public, sourced, dated body of research on the patterns affecting them has produced evidence of competence over time. That evidence is incompatible with most of the accusations a targeting operation will produce — incompetent, crazy, obsessive, unreliable. The research is itself a counter-record, available to anyone willing to verify, and the verification is reproducible. The work is what speaks.

Document the research process, not just the conclusions. A reader who sees only conclusions has to take them on faith. A reader who can see the working — the sessions, the sources, the iterations — can verify the process and arrive at the conclusions themselves. This is also the function of publishing the research process: the substrate becomes itself a public asset.

The mockery comes last. A joke written before the research is done reads as someone making fun of something they don't understand. A joke written after the research is done reads as someone who has seen the thing closely enough that the absurdity is now obvious. The audience can tell the difference. The same line, identical word for word, lands completely differently depending on whether the writer has earned it.

There is no shortcut. The research is the cost of admission. The mockery is what you do with the foundation after you have built it.
